Food is a renewable source; that means that we even though we consume it, more food can be generated.

Duh, right, otherwise how have men been eating foods like fish since the stone age without it running out.

Well, it is renewable, but what most people don’t know is that it can run out. This happens due to overharvesting.

Overharvesting refers to harvesting a renewable source, such as fish, until we are getting lesser and lesser for the same amount of effort invested.

For example, fishermen are finding it harder and harder to catch fishes. That is because we are catching so much fish that we don’t give them time to regenerate.

If this continues, fishes could disappear altogether by 2063. This doesn’t just mean extinction of a species; it also means a loss of food source for 1.2 billion people.

Currently, 98 percent of the U.S. transport sector runs on petroleum. 

The reasons for this dominance are simple. Transportation fuels derived from petroleum pack a lot of energy in a small volume and weight. And until recently, petroleum has been a bargain, at least in the United States. 

There has been strong focus in recent years in finding alternatives to oil, ranging from using biofuels like ethanol, or converting coal-to-oil and even experimenting with shale oil

Ethanol can be produced from corn, sugar, and fibrous plants, such as switchgrass. 

A government subsidy of 51 cents per gallon already makes corn-based ethanol price competitive in the United States with gasoline in the neighborhood of $3.00 per gallon

Outside the United States, ethanol has been made for many years from sugar; in Brazil, for example, ethanol from sugar accounts for about 20 percent of the transport fuel market. 

Indeed, the World Bank believes Brazil can make ethanol from sugar for about $1 per gallon. 

However, crops must be cultivated and then processed to produce the fuels. Cultivation and processing involve the use of energy and other inputs, such as fertilizer, that can have negative effects on greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts, like water pollution.

It seems there are a lot of problematic gaps between the human and the environment. For oil, there is a gap between the demand for oil and the supply of oil. 

Now, let’s go through Econs 101 real quick. 

As the world population increases, the demand for oil increases. 

Population growth is only going to get faster, and that means more oil will be demanded in the future. 

Not only are we demanding more and more oil, the worst possible scenario is unfolding - we are simply not finding any more oil. 

So when demand increases and supply remains constant/decreases, this state of affairs happens:

This is why so much hostility and wars surround who gets oil, and why there people are trying to find oil alternatives and energy alternatives such as using food for fuel.

Unless you've been living under a rock, next to a pineapple, and your name is Patrick, you already know the world is using up way too much energy. 

That’s why we should take public transport and buy green electronics. 

But where exactly is this energy going anyway, and who's using the most? Pikachu?

World energy is consumed by 4 sectors: Commercial, Residential, Transportation, and Industrial. 


The first sector uses 12% of world energy, while our shavers, television and James Bond gadgets eat up 18% of the world's energy.

Men can fly now, and travel faster than horses ever could, but it’s not a beautiful miracle. Even our trash needs transportation. 

Globalisation means that our goods are crossing the globe as well, and all the distance travelled is translated into consuming 20% of the world’s energy.

The last and definitely not least is the industrial sector, which consumes the last 50%
But it’s not a shocker. 

Our societies are becoming increasingly consumerist; we want more and more things everyday. The latest iPhone, and a new wardrobe all translate into increased demand for stuff. 

That means factories and companies will want to make more stuff to sell to us. 

But no one is looking at the behind the scenes of how our pretty new things are made. That means companies are free to operate at the lowest cost they can, which equals to robbing the environment for new resources, and using them wastefully.  

Where does our energy come from? They can come from traditional sources, such as oil, or from alternative sources such as oil alternatives or wind.

Population growth rate is increasing rapidly.

In the last century, we broke history's record in having the largest increase in world population, going from 1.6 billion to 6 billion (yes, we've been getting busy). If we keep going like energiser bunnies, there will be 9.6 billion people by 2050.

That’s like 2.4 billion more people in the world than today - in 1950, there were only 2.4 billion people.

Or alternatively, this could be a good mindset to adopt.

So obviously, resources such as food , water, energy, and space are also being depleted at an ever-increasing rate.

What’s left after the consumption is the growing mound of waste in the world.

An area's carrying capacity may be lowered by resource destruction and degradation. It can also increase if we use our resources more efficiently, like improved agricultural practices.

But considering that our Earth’s resources are finite and in the process of being depleted faster than any other point in human history, what is our carrying capacity now? 

Well, the world is developing too quickly to even ask this question. 

We have already hit the point where population growth is increasing at a breakneck speed, and there is no way to stop it (unless you employ China’s one-child policy everywhere). 

And these new babies are going to consume more food, water , energy, and space , leaving behind a growing pile of waste. (No, I'm not referring to mountains of diapers)
